Wildfire! How a Scientist Investigates Annual Patterns of Fires
published
Fire science is so important in helping pinpoint where the forest fires might occur, and where to concentrate firefighting resources. On this site, discover what kinds of information land managers accumulate to help determine the potential for wildfire in an area. Using maps from August, 2001, students assess fire risk based on six particular physical conditions in five areas, make a hypothesis based on the data accumulated, and compare their ratings with the predictions made by the National Interagency Fire Center. At the end of the investigation are links to current conditions.
