United Nations: Human Rights Day
December 10 is Human Rights Day. The United Nations mandated that a High Commissioner for promoting human rights be created in December, 1993. You’ll find a list of twenty achievements of this commission over the past twenty years. Of particular note is emphasis on protecting victims of torture and addressing human trafficking. The interactive timeline shows the mandates, committees, and conventions convened over the years to deal with human rights issues. There are links to videos that show concerns of the Human Rights Office over the years. This site celebrates the 20th anniversary of the formation of the Human Rights Commission, but you’ll find a link to past celebrations of past Human Rights Days.
