The National Archives: 19th Century Prison Ships
published
This fascinating lesson provides primary source information about the prison ships used by Great Britain in the 18th and 19th centuries. Prisoners had been shipped off to the American colonies until the Revolutionary War made them unavailable any longer. It was a while before prisoners were then transported to Australia, so in the interim prison hulks were the answer. Use these documents to find out what the attitudes of the times were toward crime and punishment and what life was like on the prison hulks. Interesting discussion questions are provided as well as a guide for using primary sources.
