The March on Washington and Its Impact
published
Fifty years ago today was the historic March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. This lesson plan from NewsHour Extra helps students understand the importance of both the march and King’s speech in the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Links to the materials needed to teach this lesson are provided, as well as thoughtful questions for students to consider when parsing King’s speech. Use the extension activities to discuss the nature of injustice and how it can be addressed.Perhaps a discussion of the Supreme Court’s recent decision on the Voting Rights Act would fit here also.
