Teaching Reading: The House
published
This lesson from Annenberg Learner is a good one for showing students how to read for specific purposes. The grade level says for grades 3-5, but I’ve used it successfully with 8th graders. The activity is part of a professional development unit on building reading comprehension, and includes several printouts to use with students and resources for more research. The House activity can be projected on a screen and you can use the different colored “markers” to highlight the three different purposes for reading, or print it out and allow your students to do it on their own. You can then use the interactive for discussion and assessment.
