Teacher Link: Light in Festivals
December is a month filled with all sorts of celebrations from all over the world. Light is a common theme because of the dark days brought on by the winter solstice. Use this lesson plan to examine the holidays and festivals celebrated in many different cultures. The five holidays highlighted in this lesson are Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Le Re’veillon, Los Posados, and St. Lucia Day. The hands-on activity for this lesson has students making a lantern for carrying a candle. Those little LED candles would a safe alternative for use in the classroom. For a science lesson, have your students observe candles and what happens when they are lit. Included are assessment questions, and pictures associated with the various holidays.
