National Mole Day
If you’ve never celebrated National Mole Day, this is the year to do so. The festivities last from 6:02 AM to 6:02 PM on October 23. Why such an obscure time and date, you might ask. It’s all in commemoration of Avogadro’s number, 6.02 x 1023 . This site from the National Mole Day Foundation explains why Avogadro’s number is so important in chemistry, and offers lots of ways to honor this number on a day which is celebrated throughout the world. The theme this year is “Molar Eclipse.” You can find links to the themes going back to 1991, read about the history of Mole Day and find a biography of Amadeo Avogadro. There are also suggestions of many activities that will make the celebration more fun. Who wouldn’t want to play Pin the Nose on the Mole?! Learn some Mole jokes and take the Mole Pledge, but remember, Mole Day lasts only twelve hours.
