History of Veterans’ Day
published
Monday will be Veterans’ Day, November 11, a day set aside to honor the veterans of all wars fought by Americans. It was originally called Armistice Day to commemorate the end of World War I, “The Great War,” at 11:00 on the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. Here you’ll find the history of Armistice Day, how it became a legal holiday, and when Veterans’ Day became the day to honor veterans of all wars. There are photographs of soldiers, President Eisenhower signing the law that changed Armistice Day to Veterans’ Day, and the confusion and consternation caused when Congress tried to change the date of Veterans’ Day.
