Today is the 50th anniversary of President Lyndon Baines Johnson’s signing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, a truly momentous occasion in protecting the rights not only of African Americans, but also of women and all minorities. This site traces the background of the act and its implementation at the height of the Civil Rights movement. President Kennedy had proposed the initial legislation, and after his assassination, LBJ took it on as a necessity to ensure equality for all citizens.
