CodeMonkey: Learn Real Coding
CodeMonkey is a wonderful and engaging site for children to learn basic programming skills. It is based on the language CoffeeScript, which compiles to JavaScript. It begins with very easy exercises and gets progressively harder, building on what students are learning. Students are required to plan a route in order to pick up bananas as they go. Barriers are placed in the path, and sometimes they must climb onto a turtle in order to travel on water. They learn how to write loops and work with variables. And all the time, they are developing their reasoning and logical thinking skills. The first 30 levels are free, and then a classroom subscription can be purchased, which includes lesson plans.
