Beacon School
Name:Beacon School
Brief Description of the Site:
Located on New York City's Upper West Side, Beacon School is an alternative public high school, grades 9-12. The school's instructional program focuses on technology, aesthetics, and the arts. The site is student-designed and student-programmed, with teacher support. The purpose of the site is to keep parents informed about school news, homework, and to showcase student work.
How to use the site:
Because it is used as a home/school communication tool, important announcements are readily available. For example, early one morning the Webmaster had already posted updated information about a weather-related school closure for that day. Parents particularly appreciate the Parent Center where they can access information about their student's schedule and homework assignments. Educators who visit the site will be interested in two areas that feature student work. The Multimedia link leads to a collection of student produced videos and the Project Showcase highlights a variety of types of student work. The Homepages area features further links to teacher- and student-made Web pages.
