BBC History Animations: Build an Iron Age House
For those who like to get down and dirty in reconstructing history, BBC Animations gives step by step instructions on how to build a roundhouse, possibly inhabited by village chieftains in the Iron Age in Britain. A list of all the materials enumerates everything necessary for construction, including “15 tonnes of clay and dung for the walls.” The measurements are in meters, so this could be a math exercise, as well as one for history. If you don’t feel like doing the actual building, the animation is interesting to watch and presents very explicit pictures that show how the house is constructed from the initial marking of a circle for the base to the thatching, daubing, and smoothing of the walls inside and out.
