American Memory: Roebling and the Brooklyn Bridge
published
May 24th is the anniversary of the opening of the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City in 1883. On this site from American Memory you'll find information about designer John A. Roebling, construction problems, links to the authorization for funding the project, photographs of the bridge, and even an account of the opening of the bridge. Modern day images of the stately bridge include one of thousands of pedestrians streaming across it on Sept. 11, 2001, fleeing from the flames and smoke in Manhattan.
