A Proposal for Early Math Education
Read “Operation Sense, Tool-Based Pedagogy, Circular Breadth: A Proposal,” a chapter from a book by Henri Picciotto, noted mathematics teacher and curriculum developer. He believes that math instruction in elementary school needs to include more than just arithmetic, important as that may be. He gives many examples of how to teach operation sense. A firm believer in the use of manipulatives, he shows ways to use them, and how they can spark conversation about mathematic principles. One of the sections of this chapter deals with “fun” math, which includes several ways to use pattern blocks, tangrams, pentominoes, and geoboards. His conclusion makes for especially thought-provoking arguments.
