Sun Microsystems has announced the Sun Java Desktop System, an open-standards-based solution that includes a GNOME desktop environment, StarOffice productivity suite, Mozilla browser, Evolution e-mail and calendar client, Java 2 Standard Edition, and a Linux operating system. Minimum supported configuration: Pentium II computers with 266 MHz, 4GB hard disk space, and 128MB RAM. Education pricing: $25 per desktop per year for software, maintenance, support, and training.
