PBS KIDS offers free apps like these to low income community centers* Among lower-income children, 27 percent have a parent with a smartphone, compared to 57 percent for higher-income children.

* Ten percent of lower-income children have a video-enabled iPod or similar device in the home, compared to 34 percent of upper-income children.

* Thirty-eight percent of lower-income parents say they don’t even know what an app is, compared to just three percent of higher-income parents.
