Houghton Mifflin Harcourt expands HMH Fuse™ platform
Global education leader Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH) today announced the release of the company’s three newest curricula in the groundbreaking HMH Fuse™ series: Algebra 1, Algebra 2 and Geometry Common Core Editions. These apps, available now in the Apple App store, combine state-of-the-art mobile technology with the award-winning curriculum of Holt McDougal to create a learning experience tailored to the needs of the 21st-century student.
“The program goes beyond the digital textbook to create an interactive experience for the tech-savvy 21st-century learner. By offering our curricula on the iPad and in the Apple App store, we hope to reach even more students and administrators looking for a new approach to math education.”
HMH Fuse™ is the first of its kind, providing students with a mobile solution catered to their fast-paced, technology-driven approach to learning. Its unique strategy motivates today’s students by presenting the material in a way that feels comfortable and fun. The program also serves as a sensible solution for school districts looking to cut costs while remaining on the cutting edge of new technology.
“HMH Fuse represents the future of K-12 learning,” said Bethlam Forsa, executive vice president of content development and publishing operations, HMH. “The program goes beyond the digital textbook to create an interactive experience for the tech-savvy 21st century learner. By offering our curricula on the iPad and in the Apple App store, we hope to reach even more students and administrators looking for a new approach to math education.”
HMH Fuse™ engages students in ways that traditional education cannot. Using the iPad, students watch engaging video tutorials, swipe through pages, get hints and walk through complex problems at home or on the go. The revolutionary platform encourages the use of personalized lesson plans by combining direct instruction, ongoing support, assessment and intervention in one easy-to-use suite of tools.
Students also have anywhere, anytime access—with or without the Internet—to find lessons, learning tools, intervention materials and homework help. With HMH Fuse, students are prepared for the ever-changing digital atmosphere through lessons focusing on critical thinking, problem solving, communication and collaboration.
Expanding the revolutionary capabilities of HMH Fuse™ even further, the new Common Core Editions include an integrated student response system, known as The Clicker, which allows instant in-class interaction between the teacher and students. The Clicker is a fun way for students to participate in class, while the teacher can immediately track how well the class comprehends the lesson.

A scratchpad submittal system has also been added to allow students to digitally turn in their work, creating a greener, paperless workflow. And, to assist ESL students, the glossary has been improved with verbal and written definitions in both English and Spanish.
The HMH Fuse™: Algebra 1 App received a Distinguished Achievement Award (DAA) from the Association of Educational Publishers (AEP) in June, recognizing its excellence as a mobile device application.
The development of the HMH Fuse platform was assisted by the expertise of ScrollMotion, a mobile technology company based in New York City. First introduced during the summer of 2010, HMH Fuse: Algebra 1 kicked-off four one-year pilots in California. Educators in Long Beach, Fresno, Riverside and San Francisco Unified School District have already seen tremendous results when using iPad-delivered content for eighth-grade algebra.
