Google Voice Local Search
My past two posts have been about using your mobile phone to keep track of information and messages. Today I wanted to share with you a service from Google called Goog 411. Basically it is a directory assistance service from Google that helps you look up phone numbers and connect to businesses and other institutions. I use it quite a bit for hands free calling when driving. Dial 1-800-GOOG-411, OR 1-800-466-4411.
Using this service, you can: search for a local business by name or category. For example you could say "Lewis Elementary School" or just "schools." After Goog 411 finds the number it will dial the number and connect you free of charge. To get the details by SMS if you're using a mobile phone, just say "text message". If you would like a map of the location, just say "map" and Goog 411 will send you an SMS text message with a web link to a Google Map showing the location of your request.
I find myself using this quite a bit, especially when I am out looking for the location of a school district meeting and I'm not quite sure of the venue location. Regular phone charges may apply, based on your telephone service provider. It's currently only available in English, in the US, and only for US business listings.
