Are Online Classes in High School Necessary?
Our community is pressuring the high school to add online courses to the standard curriculum, but many staff members are resisting the idea. Is this change really necessary?
High schools that offer online courses to students are doing them a favor. In fact, as this is being written, the state of Michigan is poised to make completion of at least one online course a requirement for high school graduation. Why?
Increasing numbers of colleges and universities are offering online courses in place of some traditional face-to-face classes. Online training is also gaining popularity in the workplace. Students and employees who have previous experience working in an online learning environment have an edge over those who do not. Building these courses into the curriculum is an opportunity to help students develop skills that will serve them well both in future educational endeavors and as members of the workforce.
