At a recent event in Lowell, Massachusetts, 3,000 high schoolers from across the country were there because their contact information from taking surveys that came with SAT and PSAT tests, or a college-planning questionnaire called MyCollegeOptions was sold to various marketing organizations. The legitimate sounding organizations and events are “essentially well-packaged marketing schemes,” said a college counselor from Shorewood (WA) High School.
