There’s no avoiding the obvious excruciating news today but there are some stories that offer some solace from the Newtown massacre. Edweek’s Justin Reich looks through the PD feeds of principal Dawn Hochsprung (https://twitter.com/DHochsprung) and finds a committed and innovative educator when it came to edtech. Social media has also enabled us to mourn and help with advice on how to talk to children about the events. This Bloomberg item reassured that schools overall are getting safer: In the 2009-2010 year, 17 children ages 5 to 18 died in homicides at school, traveling to or from campuses or at school events, according to the U.S. Education Department. That’s about half the annual figure during much of the 1990s. Of course one is still too many.
