Looking for funds to make an innovative technology project possible? Seeking recognition for outstanding teachers or students in your district? Here's a sampling of some great opportunities.
Applications are available for the 2003 TriStar Award, sponsored by AbleNet Inc. This award recognizes teams of two or more K-12 educators who utilize inclusive practices in their work with individuals with severe and profound physical and cognitive disabilities. A complete application requires background materials, letters of support, and lesson plans that reflect use of AbleNet assistive technology to support students in achieving goals. First prize is $2,000 in AbleNet gift certificates and conference fees; second prize is a $250 AbleNet gift certificate; third prize is a $150 AbleNet gift certificate. Students currently enrolled, or planning to enroll, in a two-year Process Technology degree program may be eligible for the Process Technology Scholarships, sponsored by BP Exploration and Production. Scholarships are awarded to students enrolled in programs focused on oil and gas exploration curricula. The scholarship amount is $300-$500 per semester, with a maximum award of $2,000. Boeing, NASA, and Honeywell Technology invite teams of high school students to enter the 10th annual International Space Settlement Design Competition. During this industry simulation, teams prepare designs for the first large settlement to orbit the Sun. Eight teams are invited to the Finalist Design Competition at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, with lodging and meals for 12 students and 2 advisors provided. The eight teams then compete to design a settlement on the surface of Mars. Registration is necessary to receive key competition materials; check the Web site for detailed application information. Entries are due April 2.
PLUS Vision Corp. offers Education Spotlight grants to K-12 schools. Educators can win three PLUS Vision projectors and an electronic copy board by completing an online form and explaining why having this equipment would enhance learning for their students. The entry form and additional information may be accessed at the Web site. Awards are made quarterly; applications are accepted on an ongoing basis.
Nominations are now open for the Tech Museum Awards: Technology Benefiting Humanity. Sponsored by Applied Materials, Inc., these awards are made to individuals or organizations that use technology in innovative ways to solve global problems in the areas of health, education, environment, economic development, and equality. Twenty-five finalists are recognized at a gala event held in November. Nominations are due May 2, and full applications are due June 6, 2003. The two-page nomination form is available.
Middle and high school students ages 13 and above are eligible to compete for prizes in the West Point Bicentennial Engineering Design Contest, sponsored by West Point Military Academy and the American Society of Civil Engineers. The goal of this Internet-based contest is to excite students about math, science, and technology by challenging them to create structurally accurate bridges. Each first place team member wins a $15,000 scholarship, and second place team members win $5,000 scholarships. Each member of the top five teams wins a notebook computer.
