Grants, Contests & Awards

By Compiled by Susan Brooks-Young

Looking for funds to make an innovative technology project possible? Seeking recognition for outstanding teachers or students in your district? Here are some great opportunities.

MathSoft, Inc., is offering free software to grade 9-12 math teachers through its Studyworks Innovative Teaching Grant Program. Interested teachers may submit a proposal that identifies the specific courses being targeted, the number of students enrolled and their levels, a plan for incorporating Studyworks into the curriculum, anticipated results, and two examples of innovative ways Studyworks will be used. Selected proposals qualify for a lab license for 25 seats of Studyworks for Schools, additional copies of Studyworks for Schools for the media center, and recognition on the MathSoft educational Web site, with links to the schools' home page. Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis. The nomination form and requirements are available.

The Verizon Foundation currently offers partnership programs for schools within areas served by Verizon. eSolutions provides software and all related hardware, network infrastructure, and connectivity solutions so that Verizon is your single provider of Web services. You may also request Volunteer Services or apply for Cash Grants. Learn more about the programs and take the online eligibility quiz prior to applying for assistance. Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis.

The NASA Student Involvement Program sponsors six different national competitions for students in grades K-12. First-place winners win an award presentation at their school, which is conducted by a NASA representative. Second- and third-place winners receive medals. All application materials and a teacher resource guide are available. The deadline for Space Flight Opportunities is January 15, 2003. All other competitions end January 31, 2003.

The American Association of School Librarians and Follett Library Resources recently announced the opening of nominations for the annual National School Library Media Program of the Year Award for 2003. This award recognizes exemplary school library/media centers that are fully integrated into the school's curriculum. Three awards of $10,000 each are available: one for large districts, one for small districts, and one for a single school. Additional information and the application form are available. The deadline for nominations is January 3, 2003.

Christopher Columbus Awards, sponsored by the Christopher Columbus Fellowship Foundation, are presented to teams of middle school students who take creative approaches to problem solving and know how to use available science and technology resources to make a difference in their communities. Teams compete for a one-week, all-expenses-paid trip to Walt Disney World for National Championship Week. Awards also include $36,000 in U.S. Savings Bonds and the $25,000 Columbus Foundation Community Grant. Coaching and student guides are available online. Entry forms are due January 31, 2003.

The 2003 Fulbright Memorial Fund Teacher Program, sponsored by the Fulbright Memorial Fund and the Japanese Government, offers K-12 teachers and administrators an opportunity to participate in a short-term study program in Japan. Six hundred educators will be selected to travel and study in Japan, meeting with government and education officials, visiting schools, and learning more about the relationship between Japan and the United States in an increasingly globalized society. All expenses associated with the program are fully paid through the awarded fellowships. The deadline for applications is December 10. Additional information and applications may be accessed online.
