Grants, Contests & Awards

Compiled by Susan Brooks-Young

Looking for funds to make an innovative technology project possible? Seeking recognition for outstanding teachers or students in your district? Here are some great opportunities.

Shell Oil Company and the National Science Teachers Association co-sponsor the annual Shell Science Teacher Award. This award recognizes one outstanding K-12 teacher who has had a positive impact on students, the school, and the community through the teaching of science. The winner of the award receives $10,000 and an all-expenses-paid trip to the NSTA national conference. Two finalists also receive all-expenses-paid trips to the conference. The deadline for applications is November 15. The nomination form and requirements are available in PDF format.

In the Principal of the Year program, MetLife and the National Association of Secondary School Principals recognize 104 middle and high school principals who have demonstrated success in the areas of educational leadership, solving complex problems, personal and staff professional growth, and service to the community. Two finalists from every state, the District of Columbia, and the Department of Defense Education Activity each receive a $2,500 grant; two national winners selected from this group receive an additional $7,500. The grants must be used for school-related projects or programs. The deadline for nominations is January 11, 2003. The nomination form and other requirements may be accessed from the Web site.

Forty K-6 teachers will win awards in the Science and Your Health Challenge, sponsored by Lysol Brand and the National Science Teachers Association. Intended to stimulate interest in science education, entries must describe an inquiry-based health lesson developed and taught by the teacher. Lessons may focus on topics such as personal health and hygiene, home/community health and environment, food growing, food preparation and consumption issues, disease, infection control, and safety. Winners receive $1,000 for professional development (including support for registration, travel, and housing for the NSTA National Convention or attendance at an NSTA Institute workshop) and $500 for classroom materials. Winners also are recognized at a special event during the national convention and participate in a poster session. All application information is available at the Web site. Entries are due December 16.

High school juniors attending accredited public or private schools are eligible to apply for a Discover Card Tribute Award Scholarship. Applicants must have a 2.75 GPA and demonstrate accomplishment in three of the four following areas: Special Talents, Leadership, Community Service, and Obstacles Overcome. Sponsored by Discover Card in cooperation with the American Association of School Administrators, state awards are $2,500 each (nine per state and the District of Columbia) and national awards $25,000 each (up to nine). The scholarships may be used for any type of post-high school education or training, including technical schools. Applications may be accessed at either www.aasa.org/discover.htm or www.discovercard.com, and are due in January 2003.

The Character Education Partnership sponsors the National Schools of Character Program, an annual award that recognizes K-12 schools and districts with innovative programs in character education that result in positive student behavior, school climate, and academic performance. Award-winning programs emphasize core ethical values such as honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring. Schools and districts selected receive a cash award of $2,000, national recognition, and a featured position in CEP's National Schools of Character publication. Application information is available in PDF format at the Web site. The submission deadline is December 9.
