Grants, Contests, Etc.
By Susan Brooks-Young
Looking for funds to make an innovative technology project possible? Seeking recognition for outstanding teachers or students in your district? Here's a sampling of some great opportunities.
3Com's Urban Challenge Grants offer cities, schools, and other community agencies the opportunity to work collabor-atively to develop proposals for providing information technology access to members of the community. Grants are awarded on a rolling basis, so although the deadline for this application period is November 1, it is to the applicant's benefit to submit a proposal prior to that deadline. Selected grantees are awarded $100,000 in 3Com technology. The application and other information may be accessed at the Web site.
High school teachers are invited to participate in the new Young Epidemiology Scholars Competition, sponsored by The College Board and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The competition is designed to increase student and teacher interest in the study of epidemiology and public health. To enter, a teacher submits a curriculum for an epidemiology course or an interdisciplinary unit that incorporates the study of epidemiology. Six national winners will receive $15,000 each; 18 regional winners will each be awarded $5,000 each. All application information is available at the Web site. Entries are due October 15. A student competition based on original research will be instituted in the 2003-04 school year.
Teachers of pre-K through fourth grade are invited to apply for a Digi-Block Math Grant for math manipulatives and training valued up to $5,000. A current resume and a letter of support from a site administrator, department chair, or district curriculum specialist are also required. Further details are available. Applications are due by October 15.
Do you know a high school senior, graduate, or current college student under the age of 24 who needs financial assistance to pay college expenses? Target Stores sponsor more than 2,100 All-Around Scholarships for such students. Awarded annually, four $10,000 scholarships are presented to national winners, and two $1,000 scholarships are awarded to local students by each of Target's stores across the country. Application information and selection criteria are available. All materials must be submitted by November 1.

Twenty million dollars will be awarded through nationally competitive grants. A 15 percent matching cost-share is required. Applications are accepted through November 5.
