Grants, Contests, Etc.

Compiled by Susan Brooks-Young

Looking for funds to make an innovative technology project possible? Seeking recognition for outstanding teachers or students in your district? Here's a sampling of some great opportunities.

Intel Corporation's Innovation Odyssey program invites creative K-12 teachers to win a digital camera or microscope by submitting descriptions and photos of current student projects that reflect innovative use of technology for learning support. Selected projects are spotlighted on Intel's Web site and the submitting teachers receive their choice of a camera or microscope. Applications will be accepted throughout 2002. To enter, visit the Web site.

The National Association of Partners in Education and McKee Foods Corporation are sponsoring the annual Little Debbie Award. Four winners are recognized for their work in developing partnerships that help students reach local, state, and/or national academic performance standards through systemic change. Winners get a $500 grant for the partnership of their choice and an all-expense-paid trip to the Global Summit in Washington, D.C., where they receive national recognition for their efforts. Additional information is available at the Web site. Nominations are due September 15.

High school students interested in participating in the 2002 Siemens Westinghouse Competition: Math, Science, and Technology must submit applications by October 1. This competition encourages students to undertake individual or team research projects in science, mathematics, and technology, or in combinations of these disciplines. Individual competitors must be seniors, but teams may be made up of high school students in grades 9-12. The scholarship awards are generous, ranging from $1,000 for regional runners-up to $100,000 for national winners. Information and forms are online.

Sponsored by American School Board Journal and supported by Sodexho School Services, the annual Magna Awards honor school district programs that focus on student achievement and community involvement through active participation of the local school board. Winning programs are those that receive appropriate school board support in their design and implementation and can be replicated by other districts. The grand prize is a $2,500 stipend; two Citation Awards of $1,000 each will also be given. All winners will be featured in a special supplement of American School Board Journal in spring 2003 and honored at a luncheon during the 63rd Annual National School Boards Association Conference in April 2003. The deadline for submissions is October 31. Nomination materials are available.

The theme of Technology & Learning's Portraits of Learning Digital Photography Contest for K-12 students is "Learning with Technology." Photos may represent a class students have taken, a hobby or activity the student enjoys, or be taken specifically for the contest. Each entry requires a brief explanation about why the photo represents technology in learning. Up to three photos taken between September 1, 2000 and October 1, 2002 may be submitted. Details about contest rules and entry forms are available. Winning photos will be published in the December 2002 Awards Issue of Technology & Learning. The submission deadline is October 1.

Technology & Learning's Ed Tech Leaders of the Year Program recognizes K-12 teachers, administrators, and technology specialists who use technology in innovative ways to enhance learning and motivate students. Semifinalists receive one-year subscriptions to Technology & Learning, personalized award certificates, and recognition in the December 2002 Awards Issue of the magazine. Nine finalists are profiled in an article in the December 2002 Awards Issue. Three national winners receive all of the above plus an invitation to sit on the T&L Editorial Advisory Board and an invitation to be guest editors for TechLearning.com. Application information is available. Applications are due October 1.
