Grants, Contests, Etc.

By Susan Brooks-Young

Looking for funds to make an innovative technology project possible? Seeking recognition for outstanding teachers or students in your district? Here's the latest scoop on some great opportunities.

The Gateway Foundation sponsors Teach America!, which awards grants for 12-month online training subscriptions for schools, school districts, and other educational institutions. Applicants must be a teacher, K-12 school, or other nonprofit educational institution. The application must show a demonstrated need for technology training for teachers and a plan for how technology will be used to enhance instruction. Submissions are ongoing. For more information or an application form, visit TeachAmerica!. Requests for applications may also be mailed to Executive Director, The Gateway Foundation, P.O. Box 919090, San Diego, CA 92191-9090; or faxed to (858) 799-2645.

Dow Education Initiatives for K-12 schools are available to qualifying applicants in and around the areas where Dow Chemical Company is located. Priority subject areas are math and science, teacher training, and parent involvement. Further priority is given to national, state, and local programs that benefit Dow communities; programs that promote systemic education reform in math and science; and school districts and school boards. Awards vary depending upon program needs and include cash or product donations, support for research grants, in-kind services, or volunteer time. Submissions are ongoing. For additional information and an online application, visit Dow Education. To see examples of programs supported by Dow's education initiatives, visit Dow Education NA Education Programs.

The Charles A. Dana Foundation supports innovative programs that foster creative performing arts in schools. Grants of up to $75,000 for a two-year period are for teachers, student teachers, art specialists, or professional artists who work in schools with teachers. Priority is given to projects that are brought from, or taken to, New York City; Washington, D.C.; Los Angeles; and their surrounding areas (within a 50-mile radius). The first step in the application process is a letter of intent, due October 15. This letter may be e-mailed to artsed@dana.org or sent to Burton Mirsky, Vice President, Finance, Charles A. Dana Foundation, 745 5th Ave., Ste. 700, New York, NY 10151. The current schedule calls for grants to be announced by April 15, 2002 with funding beginning May 1, 2002. For additional information, visit The Dana Foundation.

The Smarter Kids Foundation offers SMARTer Kids Grants for discounts on SMART Boards and accessories to all accredited public or private, nonprofit educational institutions, museums, and libraries with education programs in the United States or Canada. To apply, the school or institution must complete an application form, including a written description of the intended use of the SMART Roomware products and reasons for requesting a grant. Applications must be submitted by August 30 for this funding cycle; and funds must be spent by September 30. SMARTer Kids Grants for NEC Visual Presentation Products discount the cost of projection devices and/or plasma displays. Eligibility requirements and submission dates are the same. Additional information about each grant can be obtained at the Smarter Kids Foundation site.

Leonardo's Contest, sponsored by NEC Systems, Inc., is open to all teachers and students in K-12 public or private schools. The purpose of the contest is to develop a clearinghouse of classroom activities for all grade levels using the program Leonardo's Multimedia Toolbox.
