Videodiscs

The National Gallery of Art offers videodiscs on the gallery's European and American collections. Each disc features paintings, sculpture, drawings, watercolors, prints, decorative arts, and a 30-minute introduction by the gallery director. Fund-Raising

SchoolMall is an online shopping mall featuring retailers including Borders, Office Max, Dell, and Hallmark. Community members are notified of the fund-raiser through a mailer; participating schools earn up to 40 percent of every product purchased.

StarshipFund is a Web-based system that automates fund-raising for schools. Club advisors or school administrators select the product(s) to be sold and set a fundraising goal, then a customized Web page for the sale is created. Customers place their orders and arrange for payment online and have purchases shipped directly to their homes.

About Learning, Inc., offers a resource for language arts, social studies, and science teachers that provides lesson units-including step-by-step instructional guides, handouts, and comprehensive bibliographies-for $15.95 each. Units are written and field tested by teachers.

Visitors to edumatch.com can conduct custom searches for curriculum software. Global Chalkboard, from BASCOM Global Internet Services, Inc., is an education portal designed to help teachers harness the benefits of Internet-enriched curricula. The site offers educators the opportunity to connect with colleagues, share ideas, and exchange learning resources.

Key features include a custom school page, easy site administration, and custom views of grade-specific sites.

Reference

e-global library provides access to an extensive collection of electronic resources to support research needs. Designed for students in Web-based programs and developed by a team of 25 professional librarians, services include online tutorials, research guides, databases, a core collection of Internet resources, and government resources. There is also a reference desk and document request option and special sections for distance learning-related needs.

Learning Network has launched Fact Monster, a new site for students ages 9-14 that combines reference materials, fun facts and features, and individualized homework help. Resources include an encyclopedia, dictionary, atlas, and almanac.

Book

The National Education Association's Foundation for the Improvement of Education has published Connecting the Bits: A Reference for Using Technology in Teaching and Learning in K-12 Schools. The free 170-page book is a collection of seven papers that provide practical, research-based information about best practices for using computers in the classroom. Topics include an introduction to technology use in teaching and learning, use of technology to enhance project-based learning, and the promise of technology for at-risk students.
