Search Capabilities Comparison

  Basic Search Advanced Search
AltaVista Default is to treat multiple words as OR search.
Supports Boolean operators: +, -, and " ".
Menu at side of main search screen allows you to search for images, MP3/audio, or video.
Advanced Search window lets you:
  • enter Boolean phrases (using AND, NOT, OR, NEAR) in search box
  • specify dates
  • group or ungroup search results
  • specify number of results to display at once.
  • Ask Jeeves Encourages natural language entirely-search request can be a complete question or a string of words.
    Treated as OR (common stop words excluded) and multiple matches get higher ranking.
    No additional search menu, but following initial search, screen appears with:
  • questions to choose from (e.g., "Where can I find general information on the celestial body Saturn?" or "Where can I find the Web site for the company Saturn?"), each leading to a category with possible matches
  • additional links at the bottom of screen to other categories with relevant sites.
  • Excite Default is to treat multiple words as OR search, with a "concept search" feature including similar forms of each search word (e.g., walk, walked, and walks).
    Supports Boolean operators: +, -, and " ".
    Using AND instead of + turns off concept search.
    Advanced Search window lets you:
  • require or exclude a series of words or phrases
  • specify dates
  • determine number of results per page and length of description.
  • Option on main search screen lets you specify news, photos, or audio clips.
  • Go Default is to treat multiple words as OR search.
    Supports Boolean operators: +, -, and " ".
    Menu on main search screen allows you to search within Go's image and AV collections.
    Power Search window lets you:
  • require or exclude a series of words or phrases
  • search in document, title, URL, or links
  • exclude or "show only" results from a particular site.
  • Google Default is to treat multiple words as AND search.
    Can use Boolean OR and + to modify search.
    Advanced Search window lets you:
  • require or exclude words or phrases
  • search in document, title, or URL
  • specify language
  • specify number of results to display at once.
  • HotBot Default is to treat multiple words as AND search.
    Main screen has menu that lets you specify AND/OR, limit dates, require graphics or other elements, and set language.
    Other Boolean operators, including wildcards, are supported.
    Advanced search window lets you:
  • require or exclude a series of words or phrases
  • specify dates
  • specify region of world or domain name (e.g., .com or .org)
  • choose how "deep" to search (e.g., just the top page or all pages of a site)
  • specify what multimedia elements to search for (e.g., image, Java, MP3).
  • Lycos Default is to treat multiple words as AND search.
    Supports Boolean operators: +, -, " ", and OR.
    Advanced search window lets you:
  • indicate whether the words in main search screen should be treated as OR, AND, or exact phrase
  • search in document, title, URL, or links
  • specify where to search (e.g., Reuters, multimedia items)
  • exclude or "show only" results from a particular site
  • specify language.
  • Northern Light Natural language encouraged. Default is to treat multiple words as OR search.
    Supports Boolean operators +, -, and " ", as well as AND, OR, NOT, and wildcards.
    Power Search window lets you:
  • search in document, title, URL
  • choose which directory subjects to include
  • specify language or country of origin
  • specify range of dates
  • only search certain sources (e.g., .com, .org, personal pages, FAQ, news items, or job listings)
  • choose whether to include items from the "Special Collection" databases or just Web sites.
  • Yahoo Default is to treat multiple words as AND search.
    Can use Boolean OR and + to modify search.
    Can also narrow in using comprehensive directory.
    For searching Yahoo! directory sites only, you can:
  • indicate whether the words in the main search screen should be treated as AND, OR, exact phrase, or "intelligent default" (with a formula created by Yahoo!))
  • specify how recent sites should be
  • specify number of results to display on each page.
