Looking for funds to make an innovative technology project possible? Seeking recognition for outstanding teachers or students in your district? Here's the latest scoop on some great opportunities.
The Ayn Rand Institute sponsors annual essay contests for high school students. Essays are judged on both content and style.
In the Anthem Essay Contest, ninth- and tenth-grade students choose one of three topics on which to write an essay of 600-1,200 words. First prize is a $2,000 cash award. Additional prizes include: ten second prizes of $500 each; 20 third prizes of $200 each; 45 finalist prizes of $50 each; and 175 semifinalist prizes of $30 each. The deadline for submissions is April 2.
In The Fountainhead Essay Contest, eleventh- and twelfth-grade students choose one of three topics on which to write an essay of 800-1,600 words. First prize is a $10,000 cash award. Additional prizes include: five second prizes of $2,000 each; ten third prizes of $1,000 each; 35 finalist prizes of $100 each; and 200 semifinalist prizes of $50 each. The annual Grant for the Enhancement of Geographic Literacy from the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) awards $2,500 to an educator who is promoting geographic literacy by integrating geography into the social studies curriculum or classroom. Applications must be postmarked by March 21. The NCSS Outstanding Social Studies Teacher of the Year Awards honor one elementary (K-6), one middle (5-8), and two secondary (9-12) social studies teachers who are members of NCSS. Each award includes $2,500, a one-year NCSS membership, national publicity, and a commemorative gift. The deadline for applications is April 1. AbleNet, Inc.'s Inclusion Award recognizes the creative use of assistive technology in inclusive practices. The award is open to all teams who use inclusive practices in their work with individuals with severe physical or cognitive disabilities. The first-prize award consists of a $500 AbleNet gift certificate for the submitting teacher, $500 toward attending the Closing the Gap Conference, and a $1,000 AbleNet gift certificate for the submitting school. Second and third prizes are a $250 and a $150 AbleNet gift certificate, respectively. The deadline for submitting applications is April 15. The International Space Settlement Design Competition is an industry simulation for teams of high school students to design a space settlement to orbit Earth. Registration is necessary in order to receive key competition materials. Teams must submit their designs in hard copy by April 11. Eight finalist teams will be chosen to attend the Finalist Design Competition at Kennedy Space Center in Florida in July, with lodging and all meals provided. The eight finalist teams will be paired to form four competing "companies." These teams, working in conditions that are similar to those experienced by industry proposal teams, will design a settlement for the surface of the Earth's moon. The Annual NASA Ames Space Settlement Design Contest invites students from around the world in grades 6-12 (ages 11-18) to design an orbital space settlement (a permanent community in orbit). The grand prize-winning design entry will be featured on the NASA Web site. First, second, and third place awards will be given in each of six categories: individual, small group, and large group in grades 6-9; and individual, small group, and large group in grades 10-12. Prize winners and honorable mentions in each category will be invited to NASA Ames in June for a tour. All participants will receive a certificate. The deadline for entry submissions is March 31.
