Multimedia Authoring K-12

By Carol S. Holzberg, Ph.D.

Multimedia authoring is essentially word processing on cyber-steroids. With some new multimedia tools, kids can produce text-based projects enhanced with any combination of pictures, clip art, music, movies, animation, voice recordings, and information links.

What multimedia authoring offers is a variety of fun ways to express both creativity and critical thinking skills. Computer gadgets are interactive. They never lose patience. They provide constant positive feedback. They make work look vibrant. With multimedia authoring tool kits, students manipulate buttons, graphics, sounds, and transition effects to combine information gleaned from a variety of data sources, including the Internet. In the process, learning turns into interactive play.

All tool kits reviewed here produce multimedia documents with "snap, crackle, and pop." With mPOWER and HyperStudio, the end result is an electronic slide show, designed to be either self-running or user-controlled. With Web Workshop Pro, kids create dynamic, media-enriched Web pages for posting on the Internet.
