Printer Control Options
Question:
How can I control the amount of printing that students do?
The IT Guy says:
Microsoft operating systems do not have a built in limit for the number of pages printed, but you might consider putting a "hold" on the server for the print queue. Then you can manage the print queue and approve/delete print jobs as appropriate.
This is a time and labor intensive process and may not seem practical for a lab setting, but it certainly does provide control over the quantity of printouts. Make sure you are logged onto a computer with your account, and your account has queue management rights on the server.
Another solution is to encourage teachers to accept assignments from students in digital rather than printed form. At the end of a project, students can save their file in the original location (maybe in their network home folder) and then SAVE AS to a shared folder for their class period on the network. The teacher can then assess projects in that folder and will not have to open each student's home folder to find their assignment (which is an impractical method.)
Yet another solution is to train students to use a file naming convention when saving files on the network in their network home folder. Then, to find student work, the teacher can use "find file" with the start of the naming convention to locate student work. For example, if students start their project file with the words "Fryer MLK 1" followed by their last name, then this find file method would work.
