Duplicate WinXP Installation Removal

Question: I upgraded our school's computer lab notebook operating system from Win2000 to WinXP Pro. The first time I installed WinXP, I was unable to connect to our LAN! The MS manual said to reinstall, which I did. The LAN and Internet connections are OK now, but every time I start the notebook up, it asks me which OS I want to use - the choices are WinXP Pro and WINXP Pro! How do I get rid of the duplicate and avoid the 30 second extra start up?

The IT Guy says:
If you are not knowledgeable and experienced with Windows system files, I would recommend you leave this system as is. The reason you see two entries for different operating systems on your computer is that there are entries for both in the "boot.ini" file, which should be located at the root of your hard drive. If you edit this file incorrectly, you could cause your computer to not start up at all. To edit this file you need to show hidden files in My Computer. Do this by selecting the Tools menu, clicking Folder Options, the View tab, and clearing "Hide protected operating system files." Click OK. You should then be able to double click the boot.ini file in Windows Explorer and edit it with a text editor. According to Microsoft, "If you change the path to the Windows 2000 boot partition, edit the entries for both the default path and the operating system path. If you change only one, a new choice is added to the boot loader screen with the default designator next to it."
