USB Installation Problems
Question:
I tried to add a USB card to my Compaq Desktop 6000 running Win 98. I installed the card and restarted the computer. I inserted the CD to install a HP scanner and it told us that it could set up our USB for us / Just restart the CPU and then type this line into the run line. The computer restarted and then as the Windows window came up it restarted again and again. It won't get past the Windows window. I tried to remove the USB card and it does the same thing. Please tell me how to get this to stop and complete loading windows.
The IT Guy says:
You probably need to boot into safe mode and disable or remove the USB driver that was installed. For Windows 98, when the computer is restarting you should be able to invoke safe mode by holding down the F8 key, or if that does not work, holding down the control or shift key. Microsoft has documentation about booting Win98 to safe mode.
After the computer is in safe mode and you see the desktop, you want to navigate to the device manager. You can get there from the control panels and the System icon, or by right clicking My Computer and choosing properties. Once the device manager is displayed, find the listing for USB devices and click remove. You will need to get the USB card driver installed and functioning properly before you install the scanner software. You may want to go online and get an updated driver directly from the USB card manufacturer, as well as an updated driver for the scanner from HP.
