The IT Guy

Fast Screen Capture

Question: How can I capture something on the computer screen to save as documentation or to print out?

The IT Guy says:
The fastest way to do this without installing freeware or shareware is to use built-in screen capture keys. For Windows, hold down the "print screen" button (usually located at the top of the keyboard with the function keys) to capture everything on the screen and save it temporarily in the computer's "clipboard." Then open a word processor (like MS Word) and paste the clipboard contents into the file. Alternatively, hold down Alt-Print Screen to capture the current active window instead of the entire screen.

On a Macintosh computer, hold down command (the apple key) with shift and press the number 3 key above the keyboard. This will capture the entire screen to an image file. In OS 9 and earlier, this image file will be in PICT format, in OS X the default image format is PDF. These images will be saved at the root level of the hard drive (OS 9 and earlier) or on the desktop (OS X).
