Expanding the Role of your Library Media Specialist

As my school implements an Information Literacy Skills scope and sequence, how can I encourage more collaboration between teachers and our Library Media Specialist (LMS)?

Here are some initial steps you can take to increase the LMS's visibility and encourage collaboration:

  • Invite your LMS to attend faculty meetings and to participate on curriculum committees
  • Ask your LMS to participate in school wide events including Back to School Night or Open House
  • Encourage grade level groups or departments to include the LMS in planning meetings
  • Establish or expand an area of your school's Web site for Library Media Center information and services
  • Allocate a separate budget for the LMS, even if it is a small amount

Several recent studies confirm that schools with strong Library Media Center programs show improved student achievement despite factors including socio-economic status.
