Just Say, "Maybe"

A local business wants to donate used computers to my school. Should I accept them?

Accepting a donation of computer equipment is tempting, but it's important to consider several questions before you do.

  • How old are the computers and are they compatible with the equipment already on campus?
  • Will your district's technicians be able to maintain the systems?
  • Will you be able to run your software on these machines?
  • If upgrades are necessary, how costly will they be and who will pay for them?

Many districts now have equipment donation guidelines in place. Check to see what policies your district has about donations. In addition to equipment specifications, there may be other requirements. For example, you might be expected to report the donation to your school board, or inventory donated equipment in a specific way.

Equipment donations can be helpful, but if you're not careful they can also tap valuable resources that would be better allocated elsewhere.
