Making Sense of Testing Terminology
I know that the No Child Left Behind Act requires that parents be provided test information so that they can review the school's performance and compare that information to the state's progress, but few of my school's parents understand the scores that are reported. What can I do to help them?
The high-stake testing season is quickly approaching. To assist teachers and parents in understanding and interpreting test scores, prepare a glossary of test terms that includes definitions for:
- General testing terms;
- Kinds of tests administered;
- Scoring terms.
Distribute and discuss the glossaries at spring parent conferences, parent meetings, Open House Events, and through newsletters or on your school's Web site.
The Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) offers a sample glossary on their Web site.
