Professional Organizations and Leadership
Aside from taking college courses or attending an occasional conference, how can I encourage staff to increase their knowledge base and take leadership roles?
Professional organizations and the services they provide, including publications, online discussions and resources, conferences, and networking opportunities are a excellent vehicles for keeping teachers, administrators, and other adult members of the school community energized, connected, and involved.
Good leaders model the importance of participation in organizations that support professional growth by:
- Their own membership and participation in appropriate groups;
- Sharing information and ideas in meetings, newsletters, bulletins;
- Providing incentives to staff members who participate in professional activities
Educators interested in contacting professional groups focused on technology use in schools can visit the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) Web site, or the Consortium for School Networking (CoSN) site. There are also state and local groups for technology using educators.
