Expand your Definition of Technical Support
We have a technical support person on site, but teachers still aren't using computers or other technologies with their students: what's missing?
Having a technician available to assist teachers with hardware and software difficulties is a first step, but it's equally important for teachers to have access to a support person who can provide assistance in developing and implementing technology-integrated lessons, including techniques for managing technology with groups of students.
Like a technician, this person needs to be available to teachers throughout the day to offer 'just-in-time' support. Unlike a technician, this person should have a strong background in curriculum development, instructional strategies, and use of instructional technology. Some districts hire teachers on special assignment to fill this role.
Avoid the temptation to hire one person to fill both roles. Districts that take this route often find that the person spends all his/her time troubleshooting equipment and little time on curricular issues.
